Last year, after the season’s Youth Summer Creative Writing Camps were over, I sat down to take a look at the reflections that our young writers had written about their weeks here, and quickly realized that they were too good not to share.
Another summer full of young writers has come and gone, and luckily for those of us in need of a bit of writing inspiration, this year’s group was just as creative, adorable, and insightful as the last. They may be smaller– and louder– than most of our writers here, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have good advice for even the oldest and most experienced among us. Read on, and don’t forget to be awesome.
On the most surprising thing they learned about writing:
“I learned that you can bend the rules a lot more.” – Dakota B.
“That [writing] wasn’t as easy as books make it [seem]. It takes time, but it’s still fun.”
“What surprised me most about writing was how we could all learn from each other and be social even though writing isn’t necessarily the most social activity.” – Miri L.
On writing goals:
“One of my writing goals is to daydream less and write my ideas out more.”
“When I’m older, I’d like to write in a writing room.”
“My writing goals are to learn from others, accept criticism, not to let other people get me down, do my best, and not forget to be awesome.” – Miri L.
Advice they would give to an aspiring writer:
“At first try to write your ideas out and don’t worry whether or not they are good or not.”
“Practice makes perfect, and reading helps a lot.” – Dakota B.
“Don’t think of it as work, think of it as a piece of your imagination on paper.”
“Take time with your work. Always plan ahead and REVISE & EDIT! Like 1,000’s of times.” – Amelia R.
“Don’t ever think your ideas are dumb. Even if the beginning of a story isn’t good, keep going and try to make it better. Write at least a couple times a week or day, because it’ll help your writing in the long run. Don’t stop writing over the summer, it helps to keep your ideas flowing.” – Charlotte P.
“Don’t worry. Be brave. Everybody else is just as nervous as you are.” – Ana
