Student success is one of our favorite things at StoryStudio. This year we have four students publishing their first YA/MiddleGrade Novels! Big congratulations to Amelia Brunskill, Madeline Reynolds, Lauren Whalen, and Jessica Pennington. They’ve taken time from their busy writing lives to answer a few questions for us about their journey.
First up, find out how Amelia Brunskill went from Fiction I to her first contract.
Congratulations! Tell us about your upcoming novel.
My novel, THE WINDOW, is a mystery/thriller about a girl searching for answers in the wake of her twin sister’s death. She soon becomes convinced that her sister had a secret boyfriend, and that by finding him she’ll be able to understand both what happened to her sister and what caused such a rift in the close relationship that she and her sister once shared.
What has your publishing experience been like so far?
It’s been wonderful and also a bit nerve wracking at times. Fortunately, I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a group of YA/MG debut authors, and all of the information exchange and emotional support from that group has made the process a million times better.
What inspired you to write young adult?
The story I wanted to tell was just a really natural fit for YA, since I wanted the protagonist to be a teenager, and I wanted her experiences to be very emotionally immediate and raw. I also think that the teenage years are such a fascinating and formative time, and so delving into that time of life is very enjoyable for me.
What classes did you take at StoryStudio that helped with your novel?
All of the following:
- Fiction I
- YA Novel Writing
- Novel in a Year
- Creative Cohort
StoryStudio has been an enormous source of inspiration and community for me. I have learned so much from both the instructors and my fellow writers, and my book would never have gotten to where it has without their invaluable feedback and support.
We can’t wait to buy THE WINDOW! When will your book hit the stores?
April 3, 2018!
