Curious about taking an online class with us?
Here are answers to your questions about joining a StoryStudio online course:
Why Online Classes?
Because our student population is growing, and we want to spread the love! Now you can take a class with us even if your schedule is too busy, your commute is too far, or you just don’t want to get out of your pajamas.
Don’t worry: we’re still offering plenty of in-person classes at our Ravenswood studio.
How much computer knowledge do I need? I’m not very tech-savvy!
You need very little computer knowledge to participate in our online classes. If you have a reliable internet connection and have browsed websites before, then taking an online course will be familiar to you.
Students will receive detailed instructions on how to log onto your online classroom and post in your class’s private forums. If your class includes live video chats, you’ll also receive easy instructions for downloading and using our video conference software (see the Your Online Class Experience page for more details on the blog and video chats).
We want you to be able to focus your attention on writing and learning the material, not on fighting with difficult technology. We’ll keep things simple and be here to help every step of the way.
I have an old computer. Can I still do this?
Probably. Just make sure that your computer can access the internet. Also, check that your computer has a microphone. If you have an older computer that does not have a microphone, you can purchase an inexpensive headset from any store that sells electronics.
Macs and PCs and most tablets will both work fine.
How is an online class different than a class at the studio?
The big difference is convenience. Online classes allow you to complete assignments on your own time and are great for students with busy schedules or who live far from the studio.
The content and writing exercises online will be similar to what you’ll find in a classroom, and you’ll get plenty of interaction with the instructor and classmates through the classroom forums and live online chats.
What remains the same is our commitment to helping writers find their process, their voice, and their stories. As our online class community grows, we’ll also be offering additional opportunities to connect and access to practical tools.
