Description of Class
Fairy tales have long been rich source material for stories. In this one-night class led by visiting author Anca Szilágyi (Daughters of the Air), we’ll read short-shorts by contemporary masters Angela Carter and Kate Bernheimer and discuss the fairy tale techniques Bernheimer outlines in her craft essay “Fairy Tale is Form, Form is Fairy Tale”—including flatness, everyday magic, and intuitive logic.
We’ll then use these techniques in our own retellings or original tales.
Students will leave class with a rough draft, prompts for future writings, and a list of magazines publishing the form.Top
