Romance is one of the hottest-selling genres on the fiction market. But how do you turn your story into a page turner? This 4-week online class will focus on adding the fine details to make your romance into a book readers can’t put down. We’ll explore plot, character, setting, and delve into what makes romance unique. Whether you’re new to writing, or looking to strengthen your skills, this class can help take you to the next level.
Week 1: Is this a Romance? This week we’ll focus on the genre details that make a story a romance. Using examples from Rebecca (Daphne Du Maurier) and Ann Rice we’ll examine how setting enhances our story.
Week 2: Character and Conflict: Strong, motivated characters are essential for making a romance work. We’ll discuss different types of characters and how they can help create conflict and tension to move our story forward.
Week 3: Plot: Following a method from Billy Mernit’s Writing the Romantic Comedy, we’ll explore plot and structure in a romance. The three act story structure will be broken into seven story beats unique to romance.
Week 4: Turning Up the Heat: It’s time to jump into the best part of a romance – love scenes! How explicit do you want your love scenes? This week will offer tips on writing intimate scenes and making it work for your characters.
The class will keep students engaged with weekly discussions, writing exercises, and feedback from the instructor.Top
