One night. One author. One focused study of the craft.
We’re pleased to welcome award-winning author Margot Livesey to the studio for this single-session master class on writing lifelike dialogue. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to study with a master for an evening of close reading and in-depth discussion.
Dialogue ought to be the jewel in a writer’s crown, but sometimes that jewel needs some polish to truly shine. In this class, we’ll discuss how to write better, more resonant scenes that reveal characters, advance the plot, and deepen the theme of our work.
Looking at examples from great scene writers, we’ll talk about what we mean by “lifelike dialogue;” what we can leave out; how to vary our unit of speech; and how to use indirect dialogue and mini-scenes—beloved by both William Trevor and Alice Munro.
Politeness, subtext, secrecy and characterization will also be discussed.
Please bring a couple of scenes you’ve written to reconsider/revise.
Please note: Livesey’s books will be available for purchase at the studio during this session, courtesy of The Book Cellar.Top
