Description of Class
You’ve decided to write a novel…now what?
In this four-session interactive seminar, we will explore some of the basic questions that all novelists—no matter their chosen genre—should ask. Such questions include: What is my story’s “promise?” Whose story am I telling? Where are my characters going? How do I keep my readers engaged?
Throughout, we will discuss common challenges that novelists face, such as dealing with writer’s block, staying motivated, and keeping yourself organized.
Week 1: Understanding genre; thinking about plot and structure; developing scenes
Week 2: Considering POV & perspective; developing characters & dialogue
Week 3: World-Building (What goes into a meaningful & authentic setting)
Week 4: Deepening the story (Foreshadowing, flashbacks, conflict and tension)
In each session, we will (1) engage in short writing activities that will help participants put into practice ideas we have discussed; (2) analyze excerpts of published novels from a range of genres, including literary, historical, crime fiction, science fiction, and young adult, and (3) provide opportunities for peer and instructor feedback during class.Top
