Description of Class
In this class we will look at the building blocks of the novel in an effort to generate ideas and foster confidence in our ability to write our own. We’ll talk about the history and structure of the novel form, look at how novelists whittle down and/or expand theme and idea, examine voice and character, discuss world-building, and pinpoint practical tips for maintaining stamina as you power through a draft.
Week One: The History of the Form/Finding Your “Big Idea”
Week Two: Voice and Character
Week Three: Plot and Structure
Week Four: Landscape and World-Building
Week Five: Developing Your Writing Practice/What Comes Next
Each session will provide the opportunity to collectively study concepts and techniques, and then apply them to your own specific project. We’ll read and discuss published work, and offer peer and instructor feedback on in-class writing exercises. You don’t need anything but a glimmer of an idea to take this class, though writers with working drafts at all stages are welcome!Top
