Description of Class
Everyone is full of PRIDE in June, but what about the other months of the year? We can’t afford to wait until Pride Month to be proud of our community and rich Queer tradition and heritage! Join us as we read and discuss essays from James Baldwin, Jennifer Finney Boylan, Alexander Chee, Roxane Gay, Janet Mock (and others) in an effort to help us carry the rainbow with us all year long.
Each week we will read and discuss essays from various LGBTQ+ writers in search of themes, humor, voice, structure and other elements we can incorporate into our own work. We’ll also use these pieces and our discussion as a jumping off point to generate work during class.
This will be a safe, supportive and fun environment where we will celebrate our Queerness! You will be expected (and pushed) to create your bravest, boldest, most revealing work, and give constructive, kind, and supportive feedback in a casual and collaborative workshop style.
Week 1: Who is in the Queer Canon?
Who is your favorite LGBTQ+/Queer writer and/or artist? How do they inspire you? What can we learn from them?
Week 2: L is for Lesbian.
We’ll read and discuss a few essays from lesbian writers. How do these examples touch us, what did they get right, how do they inspire us, and how could these pieces go further in exploring the queer narrative?
Week 3: G is for Gay.
What are the stereotypes? We’ll read and talk about a few pieces from gay writers. How can these works inspire your story?
Week 4: B is for Bi-Sexual.
Who is bisexual? What does that even mean? We’ll read essays from bi-sexual writers. How do these pieces inspire you?
Week 5: T is for Trans.
Who is trans? Who are the trans thought leaders? We’ll read and discuss a few pieces by trans authors. How do the pieces we’ve read connect to your story as a queer person?
Week 6: Q is for Queer/Questioning.
Who is in this group? What does queer plus mean? We’ll examine a few essays that fit into this category and write inspired responses to their work.
