Description of Class
THIS CLASS IS SOLD OUT! Please put your name on the waitlist in case a spot opens up.
One night. One author. One focused study of the craft.
We’re pleased to welcome award-winning author Pam Houston to the studio for this single-session master class on getting a piece of writing off to a running start (without boring yourself to death first). Take advantage of this unique opportunity to study with a master for an evening of close reading and in-depth discussion.
The blank page is no fun whatsoever. And sometimes we are so afraid that if we fill it up with a whole lot of throat clearing, we might just end up cutting all the material later, and in the worst case scenario, all that throat clearing derails whatever energy sent us to the blank page in the first place.
In this class we will talk about (and practice) getting the good stuff down first. The most salient image, the most memorable bit of dialogue, the white hot story moment that we are most terrorized by.
We will cover everything from the initial step of paying strict attention (a la Henry James) out in the world, to methods of collecting the shiny things we witness, to finding an organic structure for those glimmers as we shape them into story. We will worry less about trying to keep everything under control and more about getting all those electrically charged particles on paper in an order whose illogic might surprise us in all the best ways.
Students should come prepared to write in class. They should also bring the opening paragraph/page of a work by a writer they admire, one that they feel got the story into the deep end right away.
