One night. One author. One focused study of the craft.
We’re pleased to welcome author Nafissa Thompson-Spires to the studio for this single-session master class on incorporating empathy into your writing. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to study with a master for an evening of close reading and in-depth discussion.
Wicked witches, daydreamy princesses: flat characterization works well in fairy tales and other abbreviated forms, but literary fiction depends on depth and dimension. This mini writing workshop explores the need for empathy in all forms of solid characterization.
Writing is itself an act of empathy, of seeing—or trying to see—the other and documenting that experience. The best writers know how to show us the humanity in even reprehensible characters, satirical work, and humor. With examples from some infamous characters, we will form a set of guidelines for approaching difficult empathetic, complex writing, spotting flat characterization and stereotypes, and turning real challenges into writing prompts.
Students should come prepared to discuss intense scenarios and to write about them. Each should arrive ready to discuss a problematic character from a specific text.Top
