One night. One author. One focused study of the craft.
We’re pleased to welcome award-winning author Téa Obreht to the studio for this single-session master class on first sentences and beginnings that hook readers. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to study with a master for an evening of close reading and in-depth discussion.
Few aspects of the writer’s craft are as frustrating as the quest for the perfect opening. A great one, after all, manages to welcome the reader, establish narrative expectations, play on natural curiosities, enthrall with incredible prose, and hint at gripping details while somehow simultaneously obscuring enough information to keep the reader engaged. Small wonder, then, that the effort of achieving all this in just a couple of lines can entangle us in an exasperating and interminable cycle of revisions and rewrites.
Combining textual analysis, writing prompts, and Q&A, this course will investigate what great literary beginnings prioritize; define that elusive certain-something to which all our openings seem to aspire; and explore the difference between what writers need to climb into their stories and what readers need to stay there.Top
