Description of Class
You’ve got sketches, ideas, and drafts of poems … now you’re ready to get some feedback.
This four-week class led by poet Vincent Francone will help you revise your existing poems or develop skills to polish those you’ll write later on. This class will consider the ways poets assess their work by reading the works of others—in this case, your classmates, as well as a diverse amount of published poets—and will practice practical revision strategies.
Week 1: Meet and greet, and reading the “greats”—how do professional poets go from working draft to finished draft?
Week 2: Trimming the leaves—we’ll revise and edit a long poem together by cutting away the excess to see what emerges when we make big changes.
Week 3: Bulking—we’ll look at sparse poems as “seeds” and collectively work on expanding small ideas to see where they can lead.
Week 4: Organization—how do poets organize their ideas? We’ll look at some ordered poems and consider the decisions that went into their structure.
Each week will also make time for group workshops and peer feedback. This course is open to writers at any level and does not require a poem written prior to the first class date.Top
