DEADLINE EXTENDED! Apply by Monday, August 28
Have stories or novel chapters ready to share with a group of committed and experienced readers? Thinking about publication?
The Advanced Fiction Workshop is designed for advanced writers who are thinking about publication. It combines in-class workshop, craft lectures/writing exercises, and information about the publishing marketplace.
The goal of the workshop is three-fold:
- Each student will workshop two submissions of up to 25 pages (total 50 pages) of a story, novel or plot outline, and receive clear and structured feedback to improve their work. We will highlight what’s working and provide constructive suggestions for further improvement. Each class will include a lecture/writing exercise on an advanced craft issue, based on the needs of the class. (Examples are: creating complex characters, using point of view, moving around in time, finding story structure, effective beginnings and endings.)
- We will also discuss pathways to publication. The class will include a visiting panel of three published writers who will discuss their pathways to publication, and each student will develop an individualized publication plan.
- We will create a collegial community of writers who support each other, provide deadlines, and workshop our work in a supportive environment.
This is an intensive class, intended for committed writers. The group will meet once a month for 7 months, leaving writers plenty of time to read and write between sessions. Each student will be expected to read manuscript drafts to be workshopped and prepare comprehensive comments. Students will also receive detailed comments from the instructor. Participants should have previous workshop experience, attend all sessions, and be prepared to participate fully in discussions.
This course is limited to 10 students. To ensure that the class will be the most beneficial to everyone, we ask that students submit a sample of their work.
To apply, please COMPLETE THIS ONLINE APPLICATION FORM.
You will be asked to submit a 10-page writing sample in a Word document. The sample can be a short story or novel excerpt.
