Here’s what to expect from an StoryStudio online writing course:
What happens in the course each week?
StoryStudio uses a state-of-the-art online course portal that offers a wide array of tools in a clean, easy-to-use environment.
Each week follows the same pattern:
You’ll log on into your online classroom to read the instructor’s post for that week. The post typically includes a welcome video, an explanation of the week’s topic, an attached reading, and an assignment.
You’ll complete the assignment on your own time and post the result to the private online classroom forum, where you’ll also read and comment on the assignments of your peers.
Live Chat and Forum Discussion
You’ll connect with other students on the class forum, where the instructor will post questions, prompts, and articles of interest for students to discuss.
Some classes also take part in a live weekly chat, where you’ll join a one-hour online meeting to discuss the topic, reading, and assignments—and meet your fellow classmates and instructor.
How does the blog work?
You’ll receive a login and password to access to your private classroom, along with instructions about how to post assignments and leave comments.
The contents are private, so any work and comments you post are visible only to you, your classmates, and the instructor.
This is a vital component to the class. You should expect to log in to your online classroom a couple of times a week to read the instructor’s message, receive assignments, post your work, and comment on the work of your classmates.
How does the live chat work?
For classes that use a live chat, the instructor will email students the day before with a link to the chat website. You’ll follow that link and join the meeting, where you’ll see and hear your instructor and classmates.
Note: to participate, you’ll need to download the chat application to your computer or sign in through the internet. But don’t worry! It only takes a few minutes and you’ll have complete instructions. We use a tool called Fuze. You may use a computer or a tablet to connect.
Participating in a live chat works best when you are in a quiet space with a good internet connection.
How much time will I spend on the class each week?
Other than the one-hour live online chat, you can expect to spend 2-3 hours of time reading and writing each week. Of course, if you have more time, you can spend more time writing.
Will I get direct feedback on my assignments?
Useful feedback is the name of the game!
Each week you’ll be asked to complete a writing assignment and post to your online classroom forum to share with the instructor and your classmates, who will respond to your work.
Also, depending upon the class, individual instructor comments and reviews—as well as group workshopping—are important components.
Will I get to know my classmates?
Yes! You’ll read and respond to their work and participate in discussions on the forums. If your class includes a live online chat, you’ll see and hear your classmates every week. The more you participate, the more connections you will make.
Our system enables you to send private messages to your classmates. You may just make a long-distance writing friend!
We’re happy to help!
