I’m a cheater.
There, I said it. And you know what? It feels great!
As Nanowrimo came to a close this week we celebrated the achievements of all types of StoryStudio writers. Our three Write-Ins and Saturday Write-a-Thon were a huge hit and not just because we gorged on pizza and caffeine. The studio was alive with the sound of typing and procrastination. What you couldn’t see, was the creative energy flying in the air.
Many writers hit their 50K word mark and they each got a big hug. Many didn’t hit that mark but still wrote a ton of new pages. They got a big hug too.
And you know who else gets a big high-five? All of us Cheaters!
I completed Nano last year and had a great time doing it. Well before November 1 I had organized my schedule and had I gotten my word count in most days before I ate breakfast.
But this year was different. The studio has grown so much in 2011 that each month is turning into a crazy busy month and I knew by October that I wasn’t going to be able to manage my time for the contest.
So I encouraged my Advanced Fiction and Novelist Roundtable students who were in the same position to consider a little Cheat-o-Wrimo: we may not write 50,000 new words, but we’ll write to a goal and focus on our stories. Because for me, it’s all about the “butt in chair” time. It’s about separating from Facebook and Twitter and newspapers and ads and television and getting back to the voices in our heads.
MG challenged herself to finish a certain number of scenes.
Lara wanted to finish a revision of a third novel draft.
Jen used the time to keeping working on her next novella.
Me? I just wanted to get back to the business of writing.
How about you? Any other cheaters out there?
