StoryStudio’s wonderful Program Curator, Scott Onak, has left this position to embark on an exciting adventure of writing and traveling.
Scott will be at a writing residency for the month of January, and then he’ll return to StoryStudio to teach the one-night class, Tackling the 4th Dimension. (Will be a great class on Time.) We hope to entice him to continue sharing his knowledge via online classes and visits to the Studio.
Like most of our staff, Scott began his StoryStudio experience as a student. He joined the studio back in the old days when our space was down the street at 3717 N. Ravenswood. I still remember the first story he worked on in class about a man feeling more and more disconnected until he simply floated away like a human balloon. It was such an affecting story (obviously, since I still remember it). It had humor and insight with an underlying sense of kindness. Just like its author.
Some facts you may not know about Scott:
–He was the first reader at our first reading. (Anyone remember this packed event at The Grafton in 2007?)
–He moved to Moscow, Idaho for three years to complete the MFA program at University of Idaho, then returned to Chicago and began working at StoryStudio.
–He helped envision and create more than a hundred classes for StoryStudio.
–He cultivated an impressive roster of instructors.
–He is a fantastic interviewer with a long list of quirky questions you won’t hear from anyone else.
–He is an accomplished writer, a gifted instructor, and a good friend.
We will miss him terribly, but take solace in knowing he won’t stay away for long.
Please join me in wishing Scott, Bon Voyage.
