Which Class Should I Take?

We know. There are a lot of choices.

That's why we've categorized our classes so you can find the right level course for your writing skills and goals. Don't be shy about calling or emailing us to talk through the choices!

Whether you're looking for an ongoing workshop or a one-night class, there are plenty of options for the beginning, intermediate, and advanced creative writer. We even have courses to help you get some rough drafts or story starts down on the page, or a Roundtable to keep you going.

For those of you who want to write better at work, we offer a growing list of Business Writing courses and private business writing coaching. We even have a Writers in Training at StoryStudio program (WITS) for young writers in grades six through twelve.

(PLEASE NOTE: Not all classes are offered every term.)

Intro Classes For Beginning Writers (or those who have been away from it for awhile)

Whether you’re coming back to writing after a long hiatus or you’ve never written a word, Intro Classes provide an entry into and lay a strong foundation for all of StoryStudio’s craft and workshop classes. These include: Check the website often to see new single-session classes geared for the newer writer.

Craft Classes For Intermediate Writers

When you’re ready to delve more deeply into a specific branch of writing, Storycraft Classes offer in-depth instruction in the building blocks of writing: language, character, scene-building, plot, tension, and voice. These classes are perfect for helping you dig deeper into writing craft and prepare you to join an ongoing workshop.

Generative Classes

Prompts and exercises can be a writer's best friend. A suggestion or a set of limitations can be freeing and get the pen rolling. Many of our classes include writing prompts, but these classes offer a focus on in-class writing and take-home prompts, along with strategies on how to grow a prompt into a story. Great for beginning or experienced writers:

Writing Workshops For Intermediate and Advanced Writers

Workshops help you to develop, shape, and polish your work through class discussion, readings, and instructor and peer review. Most of these workshops may be taken over and over again.

Roundtables

Support groups for writers? You bet. StoryStudio's unique Roundtables offer ongoing networking, support, and learning for writers who want to use their community of writers to help themselves stay on track. This is the place to talk about the unique challenges of a particular project or to share publishing leads. Students often join a roundtable in addition to a workshop.

Single-Session Classes

One night (or day) only, Single-Session classes generally focus on one specific element of storycraft, such as point of view, character development, voice, or setting, and are often taught by visiting authors and guest instructors. Past guest authors include Heidi Durrow, Elizabeth Rosner, Mark Baechtel, Kat Falls, Swati Avasthi, Margaret McMullan, Stephanie Kuehnert, Kelly O'Connor McNees, and many more. We're always adding classes, so check the main Courses & Events page to see what's running.

Business Writing

Whether you want to make your sales proposals more effective or improve employee communications, Business Writing classes use storytelling techniques to help improve your efficiency and persuasiveness in written communications. We offer classes for individuals as well as customized programs for companies and organizations.

Youth Institute-WITS

The Writers in Training at StoryStudio program (WITS) offers classes and tutoring for teens in grades 6 through 12 in both creative and academic writing.

Individual Instruction

For those looking for intensive, personalized instruction and writing coaching, we offer one-on-one sessions, manuscript critiques, novel reviews, and more.
