FOO StoryStudio Chicago with classes in the North Shore: essays made easy (10th-12th)

Essays Made Easy (10th-12th)

Writing well is a fundamental building block for effective communication throughout our lives. Good writing demonstrates good critical thinking. For high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, academic writing and college applications become less daunting with an expanded repertoire of essay strategies.

Essays Made Easy -- for students in 10th to 12th grade —- will help writers improve their command of the essay structure. In this class students will explore various rhetorical strategies as they develop roadmaps for their readers. Sessions will address structure (placement of thesis, supporting arguments, transitions, and conclusions) as well as style (personal voice, diction, mood).

Students can choose to write about topics for which they have a strong passion, whether baseball, instant fame on YouTube, or what the Higgs particle means for time travel. Over the course of these sessions, students will write and revise two to three complete essays, at least one of which will be published in a class chapbook.

The mechanics of writing, such as grammar, punctuation and concision, will also be addressed in the revision process.

This class offers developing writers the chance to learn about writing essays in a relaxed workshop environment without the pressure of grades. At StoryStudio we make writing enjoyable. In Essays Made Easy, we make essay writing, well, easy.
