Reading as a Writer

Description: Book clubs are great to discuss themes and issues. But have you ever wanted to discuss a book or story with other writers, to talk about the decisions a particular author made when writing?

For Fall Term we’ll read the contemporary novel, The Book of Salt: A Novel, by Monique Truong. This novel is a mesmerizing reimagining of the Vietnamese cook who was hired by the famous residents at 27 rue de Fleurus, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.

Students are responsible for buying their own copy of the book. (We encourage you to shop at independent bookstores! Click here to order from Women & Children First.)

It will be a great opportunity to analyze themes, narrative structure, character development, use of language and more. If you want to improve your writing, then learn from the masters!

Who Should Attend: This course is open to writers at all levels. There will be required reading and writing in advance of each class session.

NOTE: This class may be used for Certificate Program students as one required workshop.
