Poetic Imagery for Non-Poets - NS

Monday, January 30, 2012

Poet Ezra Pound said poetry is made of music, meaning, and image.

In this generative workshop, we’ll focus on the last piece, imagery. Transcendent, pitch-perfect images are often what make fiction and nonfiction writing (particularly memoir) so rich. They are what make stories cinematic and unforgettable. Think of works by Mary Karr, Margaret Atwood, Mark Doty, Jeannette Walls, and Tobias Wolff.

Taking cues from contemporary writers, workshop participants will have an opportunity to generate poetic images that can enhance their own fiction or nonfiction projects. Participants will also learn a process to help them create effective images on their own, which they can continue to use to enrich their writing.
