Freelance Magazine Writing

Tuesdays, September 21 to November 9

If you’re not sure how to break into magazine writing, the answer is simple. When in doubt, write what you know.

Writers will be encouraged to gain experience about — and improve their abilities in — selecting, researching, writing and submitting articles for publication. We’ll read a selection of articles, analyzing and identifying the qualities that make up a professional and publishable article. We’ll also investigate how to navigate the freelance marketplace, while discussing industry policies and standards for publication.

Students will be asked to develop and workshop their own article throughout this 8-week course of the class, with the end goal of producing at least one magazine article (350-1,200 words) that is ready for submission – and publication!

Writer’s Roadmap
This course is suited for those interested in writing for magazine publication. Graduates of Creative Writing I and/or Craft of Personal Narrative will especially benefit.

Students interesting in continuing their work from this class may wish to join the Magazine Writing Workshop (coming in Spring), or if you haven’t taken it already, the Craft of Personal Narrative.
