Digging Into Character

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Join us for this special one-night class, led by local author Stephanie Kuehnert!

Description: Stephanie Kuehnert has made a name for herself as a writer of gritty, edgy novels with protagonists who seem so familiar they could have been sitting behind us in high school algebra. In her novels I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone and Ballads of Suburbia, she creates uniquely familiar characters against an even more familiar background: Chicago and its suburbs.

In this special one-night class, she’ll share some of her own methods for digging deep into character and setting to create a world as familiar as your own! We’ll talk about voice, point of view, and creating rich, believable characters who stay with the reader long after the book is done. You’ll get tips and exercises for tapping into character voice and discovering the importance of setting and place in your story. We’ll write, workshop, and discuss various ways of getting into our character’s heads.

We’ll also talk about the logistics of living the writer’s life — the process of writing, how to get an agent, how to get published, and more.
