Craft of Novel Writing
This class returns in Fall 2011. Email us to be notified when registration opens.
Writing a novel can be a daunting task. But you don’t have to do it alone!
The Craft of Novel Writing is perfect for writers just beginning their book length projects who want direction on developing outlines, understanding character and, especially, finding the right voice with which to tell the story. To write a novel you have to love what you are writing and find ways to keep that alive.
Together we will read as writers Carson McCuller’s classic novel, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” which will inform our discussions about decisions the novelist must make and will enlighten our understanding of voice and structure.
Books may be purchased from our community partner, the Book Cellar in Lincoln Square. (Mention your StoryStudio class.)
This class will:
- provide daring and useful tools for getting started
- provide writing prompts to help you make crucial decisions about your book
- focus your efforts and offer problem solving ideas
- delve deeper into scene setting, character and language
- help you find the right “voice” for your story
- workshop each student’s opening pages
Useful and focused feedback on written submissions is provided by the instructor.

Writer’s Roadmap
This is an excellent course for beginning and intermediate writers interested in writing a novel. It is a natural continuation for students who have competed Fiction I or Creative Writing I. You may even be interested in generating material in the Story Workout class.
After completing this course, writers should consider joining the Novel Workshop.
