Comic Essays

Description: Do you like David Sedaris? Or Sarah Vowell? Have you ever wanted to write witty autobiographical memoirs the way they do?

This six-week course will focus on unlocking your inner comic writer and show how you can turn your personal experiences into funny (or very funny) comic essays. We’ll examine essays and what makes them funny, then we’ll apply this knowledge to our own growing drafts.

If you took Comic Essay over the summer, this will be a wonderful extension to the discussions and creativity of those sessions.

If you’re new to the genre, get ready for a fun, imaginative and expressive course.

Who Should Attend: This course is for writers of all levels. Students need not have any prepared pieces before class begins.

About the Instructor: Jack Helbig is a theater critic, arts writer, and essayist for various publications. He regularly writes for the Chicago Reader and the Daily Herald. Read more…
