Building a Mystery

Are you drawn to murder and mayhem? Are you fascinated by crime stories? Can’t get enough of authors like Stieg Larsson, Janet Evanovich, and Sue Grafton?

If you want to join their ranks, it helps to have an insider’s view of the genre. In this single session class, we’ll discuss the essential elements of plotting a mystery, how to keep the reader guessing, and how mystery writers research murder. We’ll do exercises that will help you craft a main character and a slew of suspects, and you’ll learn the single most important thing that publishers want in a new mystery.

About the Instructor: Clare O’Donohue is the author of five mysteries in two different series. Her sixth novel, Life Without Parole, will be out in April. All of her books are published by Plume, an imprint of Penguin Books.
