Beginning Fiction

Description: This eight-session course combines the teaching of story craft elements with student manuscript readings and discussions. You’ll be encouraged to work on a self-defined piece, while experimenting with a variety of writing prompts and exercises. Great place to start for those ready to start telling stories.

This class will focus on teaching the elements of storytelling and how they apply to fiction. We’ll also work on freeing our imaginations to discover more about our characters and their stories. We’ll consider the thoughts and writings of published authors, the narrative and story structure of fiction, and the feedback and support of our classmates.

In the workshop component of the class, you’ll share your work and receive critical feedback to help you move forward. You will also receive extensive instructor comments. (Students do not need any prepared stories before the course begins!)

StoryStudio classes are typically limited to 15 participants or fewer. This intimate setting allows for greater interaction and personal attention.

Who Should Attend: This course is for writers of all levels, from beginners to published authors wishing to “go back to the basics.”

Should I take Beginning Fiction or Creative Writing I? If you know your focus is writing fiction, then we recommend taking Beginning Fiction. However, if you think you may be interested in experimenting with different forms of fiction and creative non-fiction, then take a look at Creative Writing I.

NOTE: This class may be used for Certificate Program students as one required elective.
