Meets monthly beginning Thursday, March 27, 2014
This is the year to write your memoir!
It takes hard work and courage to record your experiences on the page, and a book-length manuscript poses extra challenges to the memoirist. How do you structure a longer work? How do you capture the people you know and the difficult moments in detail? And how do you keep yourself at the desk writing through it all?
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to write your memoir alone!
Memoir in a Year is a unique opportunity to join a writing cohort, study memoir craft, workshop key scenes, measure your progress, meet goals and deadlines, give and get support for the long slog from plotting to composition to revision and beyond.
Writers will meet monthly for three-hour sessions to discuss craft, solve issues, workshop 5-7 page scenes, and share some snacks and beverages. In between class sessions you’ll have plenty of time to write and generate new work while still staying in touch via StoryStudio’s private class blog.
We’ve structured this program to provide maximum benefit without demanding too much time away from focusing on your own work. In addition to workshopping short scenes in class, participants will meet individually with the instructor for 100-page manuscript reviews.
We will have an online forum for exchanging additional work, reporting our progress and struggles, and keeping ourselves honest in our work habits. Whether you’ve already made headway on your memoir or are just gathering ideas, this group will provide the structure, companionship, feedback, good humor and emotional support to help you see your project through.
This course is limited to 12 students and is submission based. To apply, please contact us and submit up to 10 pages of a working draft. StoryStudio will then contact you to determine if the Memoir in a Year program, or a different workshop class, would be the best fit.
PLEASE NOTE: This program is for writers who are ready to make a strong commitment to their work. Students will be expected to participate in the full program.
Who should attend?
- Adults 18 and over
- Intermediate and Advanced writers
