Why should I choose StoryStudio?
Since 2003, we have been helping Chicago writers find their voices, learn the art and craft of creative writing, and tell their stories. We also apply these lessons to the business world, where writers must be clear, concise and compelling.
- Designed for you: Our customized instruction is tailored to meet your specific communications needs.
- Small group instruction: StoryStudio’s Words for Work classes are typically limited to 15 students, assuring personal attention and plenty of interaction.
- High energy and hands-on: Our learning style is highly interactive (and fun)–but practical, as students can work on “real-life” projects right out of their inboxes.
- Writers on writing: Our instructors are professional writers, editors and teachers, NOT sales reps presenting rehearsed jargon and lingo.
- Creative approaches to corporate writing: Using storytelling techniques to unlock the inner writer, we show your team how to tap into their own creative spirit, while still remaining true to corporate philosophy and culture.
All of StoryStudio’s business writing courses can be customized for your team and your particular needs.
Why does “storytelling” matter? This is supposed to be work.
Good stories compel us to read on–to turn the page or buy the next book in a series. This ability to “persuade” is a vital component of any communication. A well-crafted story can change our minds and compel us to take action. That’s what a well-crafted business communication should do, too: persuade the reader and motivate him or her to action.
Which program should I choose?
We’re happy to talk with you about our Words for Work curriculum and which elements(s) would generate the greatest value for you and/or your organizations. Call 773.477.7710 or email us to discuss your communications goals and learning objectives.
Our place or yours…or virtual?
All StoryStudio workshops can be delivered onsite at your company’s offices, making it easy for employees to attend.
We are also happy to host students at the StoryStudio facilities on the north side of Chicago. Our studio is housed in a rehabbed loft featuring classrooms, a student lounge, coffee, tea and wifi. The relaxed, colorful setting provides plenty of inspiration–an ideal offsite location for teams to focus and learning together.
For teams located outside Chicagoland, we can travel to your location, or deliver instruction through interactive virtual sessions.
We are hiring a lot of new employees. Do you have a training program for them?
Yes! Younger employees and those new to your company will benefit from a customized version of our Business Writing Fundamentals class. They’ll learn good business writing tactics, along with some basics of relationship building and how to navigate your company culture.
If your organization sponsors a mentoring program for young professionals, you might consider offering Words for Work business book club events or our course in Relationship Building.
How do I convince my boss that we should do this?
It’s easy to make a strong business case for business writing instruction. After all, communication is the basis of every work relationship and project team.
In this economy, strong business writing skills are more important than ever. In a recent survey, 80 percent of Fortune 1000 executives said they’ve declined to interview candidates merely because of poor grammar, spelling, or punctuation in resumes and cover letters. (DuBay, W: The Principles of Readability) Just last summer, the Harvard Business Review published, “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why.”
In short, communications from a skilled business writer can generate savings, profits, and other favorable returns. As business writers speak knowledgeably, confidently, and skillfully on an organization’s behalf, they create an increasingly positive impression with readers. And it’s the attention and action of those readers–the employees, customers, consumers, shareholders, investors, constituents, and other stakeholders–who influence an organizations’ success.
Your business is worth this investment.
